Keep it Simple, Smarty!
It seems blatantly contradictory. Maybe that's why so many people resist the notion of keeping their proverbial plates free of distractions from the main event.
     The main event, of course, is what your business is really about. It's your core. Your focus. It's narrow and very deep. It's also nothing less than your niche. 
     The kind of distractions...
     I'm talking about happen especially when times are volatile and unpredictable. When the economy takes a beating and so do your clients. It's the distraction of the mindless addition of products and services. In good times this is tricky; in turbulent times it's downright dangerous. You see it happen all the time. People and businesses who become so "full-service" their business actually dwindles. They have so many different widgets for sale, they aren't sure which ones are more important than others. They are trying to be all things to all people and, of course, it won't work.
     Antoine de Saint-Exupery, author of The Little Prince, expressed this in yet another way saying, "A designer knows that he has achieved perfection not when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing left to take away." 
     The question I ask you, then, is "What can you still take away from your own business as you hone it toward perfection?"

Nova Scotia Beckons
     Actually Nova Scotia has beckoned me since I was in elementary school that proverbial 100 years ago. Fascinated by its history and beautiful scenery, I have seemingly forever wanted to visit this lovely Canadian Maritime Province. So it is that on Friday we leave for a few weeks of just plain "R&R" in the far reaches of northeastern Canada.
      Although I will be taking my laptop, which has been known to get (and send) email from the most distant corners of the globe, I'm truly practicing vacation which means I may be a bit leisurely in returning emails.
