Meet "The Niche Doctor"

I am so pleased you have found your way to my website and hope you find your visit here valuable, both personally and professionally.
Over the years one of the most persistent, indeed predictable questions I am asked, is "how did you get into your business?" That is, "how did you get your niche?" I have decided to use this introductory page to share my story with you.
Like so many people, my early professional years were successful, at least by external standards. Whether I was managing a large project for the American Bar Association, developing a law-related education project for the University where I was a professor or developing a program for educators when I was a curriculum specialist in what now seems like another lifetime, or even completing my doctorate at Stanford University, I always "excelled."
But I had a very disquieting secret. I knew my career and life to that point had been mindless. Not without value, but without intention. I was dutifully going down a path I had not consciously chosen. I also knew it was neither deeply satisfying nor personally rewarding. I knew there was more; the problem was I didn’t know what it was. And worse yet, I didn’t know how to get there. What I did know was I needed to create something that would give me personal happiness, autonomy, and financial
independence. If you will, I needed to create my own niche. Thus, in the early eighties I launched my own consulting business. From the beginning, my goal was to save others the pain and aggravation of wasting time and money resulting from an unfocused, all-over-the map existence.
But another ingredient soon entered the picture and that ingredient has made my own personal and business niche complete. It is expressed in the sub-title of my first edition, NICHECRAFT™. That subtitle, "The Art of Being Special" grew out of my repeated observations of individuals and businesses working hard, being honest, producing excellent products--but alas, not achieving their own goals. The fact is, I increasingly heard myself saying to them, "This is all very nice and interesting and even excellent. But so what? What is Special? What are you doing that distinguishes you from everyone else?" At the same time I looked around and saw an extraordinary number of my own clients who had achieved unparalleled success with their careers and businesses. Then and there I consciously decided to "unpack" the process I had been using with those clients, both individual and corporate--the process that guided them to their goals
and ambitions. The result of that "unpacking" was my nine-step process for creating what I today refer to as "the good niche." The kind that takes you where you want to go, that is intentional that someone else wants, and that can evolve. Perhaps best of all, it’s a niche that builds from a position of strength. Whether you are creating your business, professional, or personal niche, you start with your richest capital resources.
So, today when we work with clients, whatever size firm, it is that position of strength philosophy we start with. From there we move through my nine-step process creating the niche that takes you and/or your company where you want to go. Unlike many years ago, it is easy for me to articulate my niche. It is one I live and love. My niche is helping others achieve their niche.
